PolishPit started in a cold garage on a Sunday afternoon, somewhere between a half-finished paint correction and a bottle of ceramic coating that didn't do a single thing it promised on the label. That garage belonged to Marcus Reyes, a former auto body technician turned detailing enthusiast, who got tired of wasting money on products that looked great in a sponsored Instagram post and performed like dish soap on a hood full of swirl marks.
Marcus spent nine years working in collision repair and detailing shops around the Pacific Northwest before deciding to go independent as a mobile detailer in 2018. Running his own business meant he was the one buying the compounds, pads, microfiber towels, and waxes — and he was the one who had to answer to a customer when a product underperformed on their paint. That accountability changed how he shopped. He started keeping a spreadsheet of every product he tried, rating things like cut, gloss, durability, ease of use, and value for money.
By 2021, that spreadsheet had grown into a 40-page document that friends in the detailing community kept asking to see. A few of them suggested he turn it into something public. PolishPit launched later that year as a simple blog with a handful of polish comparisons. It has since grown into a full review site covering everything from clay bars and foam cannons to interior protectants and drying towels, but the mission has never changed: give detailers — professional and weekend warrior alike — honest, hands-on information before they spend their money.
PolishPit is run by a small team of people who actually detail cars for a living or as a serious hobby. Marcus still leads product testing and writes the majority of in-depth reviews. He's joined by Priya Nair, a chemical engineer with a background in surfactant formulation who helps translate manufacturer marketing claims into plain language and explains what's really happening at a molecular level when a product claims to be "pH neutral" or "hydrophobic." Rounding out the team is Dale Whitfield, a longtime car show competitor and paint correction specialist who focuses on machine polishing, compounds, and pad testing.
None of us are paid spokespeople for any brand, and none of us have a background in generic content writing. We're detailers first, writers second.
